What is an eSIM?
Telecommunications giant Econet Telecom continues to lead the way as the pioneer of innovation and digital solutions in Lesotho. Econet prides itself as the only provider of eSIM services across the country (Lesotho). An eSIM is a digital SIM embedded within the device itself. Unlike the standard physical SIM card that is currently in use, the eSIM is built onto the device and cannot be removed. The chip that stores the eSIM profiles is called an Embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card (eUICC). Many cellphones manufactures are now releasing handsets that are compatible with eSIM and an eSIM makes it easy to switch from one phone account to another without having to replace the SIM card each time. This technology is becoming more popular because of its convenience, and this is a new service that you can get in Lesotho through Econet without changing your physical sim card number (more especially if you are visiting from outside the country).
Which phones are compatible with an eSIM?
Since this is newer technology, not all smartphones are compatible to eSIM services. However, any smartphone that provides an EID is compatible. In Lesotho, you can check if your smartphone is compatible by dialing *#06#. If you get an EID, it means your smartphone is compatible and you can use eSIM.
Where and how can I activate eSIM?
Customers can get an eSIM provisioned on their phones by visiting any Econet Telecom Lesotho shop with an ID/passport. The subscriber will be requested to choose an Econet number, and this number will be mapped to the ICCID of the eSIM to be downloaded by the subscriber. The customer will be assisted throughout this process and their eSIM will be activated at an affordable cost of M100.00.
The customer will thereafter be well placed to enjoy seamless connectivity with their loved ones on Lesotho’s Best Data Network.
